Police urge caution as snow, ice affect roads

5:34 pm on 16 June 2012

Police are asking motorists to exercise caution on highways around the country after heavy snowfalls.

Both the Desert Road and the Napier-Taupo road had to close early on Saturday because of heavy snow but have both since re-opened.

Grit and calcium magnesium acetate have been applied to both roads to limit the impact of ice on motorists.

Towing vehicles were been banned from using state highway 73 between Springfield and Arthurs pass in the South Island because of heavy snow there.

Earlier, the Transport Agency said five cars and two truck and trailer units were stuck on the Napier - Taupo route,

They were freed by contractors in 4WD vehicles after snow ploughs cleared the road.
