The Retirement Commissioner says people who are considering stopping work should draw up a fresh budget to accomodate the current financial turmoil.

The New Zealand Superannuation Pension is worth 66% of the average wage for a couple on about $24,000 a year.

Many people also have other retirement savings plans and investments which could take a battering.

Commissioner Diana Crossan says people worried about the financial turmoil hurting their retirement plans, should take a fresh look at their budget.

She advises working out a realistic budget, downsizing the family home and even renting out a room if more income is needed.
