Two men charged over the theft of 96 military medals from the Waiouru Army Museum have been remanded in custody.

The medals, which included nine Victoria Crosses and two George Crosses, were stolen in December last year.

They were safely returned in February following a $300,000 reward and are due to be rehoused at the museum during a ceremony next week.

A 39-year-old man from Te Atatu Peninsula and a 37-year-old from Waimauku were arrested on Wednesday and each faced a charge of burglary when they appeared at Auckland District Court.

The 37-year-old also faces 42 unrelated fraud charges.

The men's names have been suppressed and they were ordered to reappear in court next week.

Detective Senior Sergeant Bensemann said the investigation has been extremely detailed and complex and further charges are possible.
