Pepper spray needed to stop teen driver

8:04 am on 24 June 2012

Police in Whangarei had to pepper spray a teenage driver through the window of a moving car on Sunday morning, to get him to stop.

Officers pursued the vehicle for 6.2km after it was driven away from a random alcohol testing station on Baldrock Road, between State Highway One and Mangawhai.

The vehicle twice slowed long enough for officers to approach the door, before the driver sped away again.

The vehicle was finally stopped after pepper spray was sprayed through the driver's window.

The driver was found to have 933 microgrammes of alcohol per litre of breath, which is more than twice the adult limit.

The incident began at 1.45 am on Sunday.

Several charges of dangerous driving and drink driving have been laid.
