Check of fine print advised with new Dotcom venture

A copyright expert says musicians thinking about signing up to a new online venture from Kim Dotcom should be sure to read the fine print.

The Megaupload founder, who's fighting extradition from New Zealand to the United States on internet piracy charges, has announced plans for a new site, Megabox, which will allow artists to sell music directly to fans.

Patent attorney Matt Adams of AJ Park says the concept sounds good, but there are risks for artists.

Mr Adams says musicians looking at similar online services should also ask what rights they are giving up, and for what purposes people can use their music.

Extradition proceedings for Mr Dotcom will be heard in Auckland on 6 August.
