Youth prosecutions fall

9:41 pm on 26 June 2012

The number of young people convicted of a serious offence has nearly halved in five years.

Statistics from the Ministry of Justice on child and youth prosecutions show the number fell from 1875 in 2006 to just under 1000 last year.

The number given adult sentences fell by more than 50% in 2011, compared to the previous year.

There were, however, increases in the numbers of supervision orders given and young people placed on rehabilitation and education programmes.
