Judge calls for electronic tags for some youth

Courts should use electronic surveillance tags to monitor some 14 to 16-year-olds on bail, says principal Youth Court Judge Andrew Becroft.

Judge Becroft told a youth justice forum on Monday that there might be a stigma attached to wearing an ankle bracelet to monitor teenagers movements, but it was better than those individuals being remanded in custody.

He also told lawyers at the Auckland District Law Society workshop that the virtual disappearance of community sentences of supervision with activities because of a lack of suitable programmes amounted to a tragedy.
