Police in Dunedin say a man who stole a car containing two young children seems to have been a drunken opportunist.

An Invercargill man, 25, was arrested on Thursday night after jumping into the car at the Forbury service station in South Dunedin and driving at speeds of up to 150 km an hour on the Southern Motorway.

He later crashed into an overbridge and fled on foot but was arrested soon after.

Senior Sergeant Tania Baron says the children aged 18 months and three years, were not injured.

She says the man seems not to have known the children were sleeping in the back.

Senior Sergeant Baron says the accused will appear in court on Friday facing a drink-drive charge, but other charges for unlawfully taking a vehicle, dangerous driving and driving disqualified will follow.
