NZ population rising

3:32 pm on 23 October 2008

The population of New Zealand continues to rise.

Statistics New Zealand estimates that the population increased by about 40,300 in the year to June.

That was mostly due to births outnumbering deaths, which accounted for an increase of 35,600 people.

That is the largest rate of natural increase since 1973.

Some 53% of the population lives in either Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington or Christchurch.
