Queenstown Winter Festival a success - organiser

4:14 pm on 1 July 2012

Queenstown's annual Winter Festival wraps up on Sunday night with a Mardi Gras street parade.

Festival director Simon Green says the event has been a success, with the arrival of snow two weeks ago.

Last year, the event was marred by the late arrival of snow, which also caused hundreds of skifield workers to go without pay for nearly five weeks.

Mr Green says this year, festival goers have been slightly down on previous years, however the economic spinoff for the resort remains the same.

He says the Queenstown community has supported the charity component of the event, with tens of thousands of dollars raised for the local coastguard.

About 10,000 people are expected to gather in the streets for the finale party.
