Fuel pumps dry in remote Arthur's Pass

7:13 am on 25 October 2008

The only petrol station in remote Arthur's Pass, halfway between Christchurch and Greymouth in the South Island, will have no fuel at Labour Weekend.

Supplied by Caltex, the Arthur's Pass Tearooms on State Highway 73 usually has both 91 and diesel.

But operator Grant Molloy says fuel ordered a week ago has not arrived in time for the long weekend.

Mr Molloy says the pumps will not be full until Monday and warns people travelling between Christchurch and Greymouth to ensure that they have sufficient fuel for the 258km journey.

However, if desperate, there is a service station in Springfield in Canterbury and a self-service station available in Kumara, on the West Coast for fuel card holders.
