Police investigate cheap flight scam

Waikato Police are investigating a scam where people paid for flights to Tonga but did not get seats on a plane.

So far, 15 people have contacted them after buying the heavily discounted return airfares.

Police say when ticket buyers turned up at the airport they found there were no seats in their names.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Andy Bu Bear says the victims are in Auckland and south Auckland, and there are reports of people from Wellington and the South Island being affected.

He says officers will be contact their colleagues in these areas to try and work out the extent of the fraud.

Anyone who thinks they have been a victim of the scam is being urged to contact the Hamilton police.
