A man injured in a water treatment plant explosion is in a comfortable condition in Lower Hutt Hospital.

The man, 50, was injured in the explosion Wednesday afternoon, in the switchboard room at the Te Marua plant north of Upper Hutt.

A spokesperson for the Hutt Valley District Health Board says he was in a stable condition on arrival and is recovering well.

The blast temporarily shut down power to the plant, but the water supply was not affected.

Wellington Regional Council spokesperson Brett Sangster says the council is working with police to find out what caused the explosion and to put measures in place to prevent it happening again.
