Babies to be enrolled with GP earlier

Babies will be enrolled with GPs earlier to ensure they are vaccinated sooner under a new health policy.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says fewer than half of newborns are currently enrolled with a GP at 12 weeks of age.

Under a new policy, they will be entered into a patient database as soon as their parents nominate their GP at birthing units.

Mr Ryall says the biggest benefit is that GP practices can remind parents that their baby is due for its first vaccination at six weeks.
