Second quake felt in central North Island

The Bay of Plenty region was rattled by an earthquake early on Saturday night.

The magnitude 3.4 quake struck at 7.28pm.

It was 5km deep and was centred 20km north of Matata and 40km north-west of Whakatane.

At 12.50pm on Saturday a 5.7 earthquake rattled the central North Island.

The earthquake was 10km south-west of Turangi and at a depth of 90km, .

GeoNet says the quake was felt widely over the North Island.

There have been no reports of damage or problems arising from the earthquakes.
