State Highway 2 near Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty has re-opened following a crash that killed two people.
The police say the collision involved two cars and happened just after 6.30am on Saturday at Nukuhou near Glenholme Road, between Whakatane and Opotiki.
Two occupants of the car which was travelling eastbound died at the scene.
A man in his 30s who was driving westbound was airlifted to Tauranga hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
