Gill net ban wanted to save dolphins

The World Wildlife Fund wants the Government to totally ban gill fishing nets, to prevent the extinction of Maui's dolphins.

At the latest meeting of the International Whaling Commission in Panama, the commission's scientific committee recommended New Zealand eliminate the nets.

The Government last week announced further restrictions on gill net fishing along the Taranaki coast.

But the WWF says those measures fall short of solving the problem.

It says there needs to be a complete ban, before the species is lost forever.

Fifty five Maui's dolphins are left.
