The owner of a convenience store in Turangi has been fined $750 for selling cigarettes to a minor.

Sanjay Malaviya was caught after he sold cigarettes to a 12-year-old in an operation run by the Ministry of Health.

It was his fourth conviction for this offence and he was fined $750 plus court costs on two charges.

The Ministry's national director of tobacco control says the fines are at the upper end of the punishments imposed by the court so far.

As well as the fines and costs, Malaviya was banned from selling tobacco products for two months.
