Welcome Bay shooting a deliberate attack, say police

10:21 pm on 10 July 2012

Police say the shooting of a man in Tauranga was a deliberate attack and it is lucky no-one else was hurt.

The 43-year-old victim was treated in Tauranga Hospital after two shots were fired into a house on Meander Drive in Welcome Bay about 9pm on Monday.

The man received shotgun pellet injuries to his head, but police say they are not life-threatening.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner, says some of the pellets landed in and around a child's bed and it is only sheer luck the child was not home at the time.

Mr Turner wants to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting.

The gunman remains at large.
