Cricket pavilion named in honour of Hadlee family

A celebrated cricketing family will be honoured with a new pavilion at Christchurch's Hagley Oval.

Canterbury Cricket says it plans to build a new two-storey building, to be called the Hadlee Pavilion.

The organisation has faced pressure over its plans to develop Hagley Oval into a first-class cricket venue, with critics accusing the association of commercialising the area.

Announcing the plans on Tuesday chief executive Lee Germon says the pavilion will fit sensitively into the Hagley Oval environment.

Sir Richard Hadlee says his family is honoured by the proposal and is keen to see a specifically built cricket ground so the earthquake-damaged city does not miss out on further international matches.
