New high school confirmed for Queenstown

The Ministry of Education has confirmed it will move Queenstown's Wakatipu High School to a new site in Frankton.

The ministry has been consulting for years about a potential site to replace the old school near central Queenstown.

It says the new school will cater for up to 1500 pupils and is the logical choice, given its central location. It will open in 2017.

The ministry has bought the land, which covers an area bigger than 11 rugby fields.

It predicts the high school role of 700 will to expand to more than twice that by 2026.
