Poster campaigns a waste - trust

Waipareira Trust leaders have told the Government to stop wasting money on posters, brochures and television campaigns about drugs, alcohol and child abuse.

Instead, the trust says, the Government should focus more money on specialist workers for troubled communities.

Trust workers - who provide health, social and justice services in west Auckland - spoke at the health select committee in Auckland on Friday.

Spokesperson Hemi Tahuri says the people it works with are often part of some of the country's worst statistics.

He says the trust takes a marae-based approach to encourage Maori to stop drinking alcohol, smoking, taking drugs and gambling in front of children.

He says the Government's awareness campaigns are not working.
