Wellington's Hurricanes have beaten Waikato's Chiefs by 28 points to 25, keeping alive their play-off hopes in super rugby.

Key difference between the two teams was a last-gasp try by the Hurricanes, deep into extra time.

Hooker Dane Coles scored that controversial try more than four minutes after the final hooter had sounded.

Coles had appeared to be have fallen short and then made a double movement to get the ball over the line in the 85th minute, but television official Mike Fraser ruled he had scored the try.

Hurricanes team moves to 57 points on the table, though the players need other results to go their way to make the top six.

Chiefs players had already secured top spot in the New Zealand conference and at least second overall for the play-offs.
