Auckland philanthropist Hugh Green has died at the age of 80.

The Irish-born farmer, building contractor and investor was named New Zealand's 23rd richest person in last year's National Business Review Rich List with a fortune of some $350 million.

Through his organisation, the Hugh Green Foundation, he gave money to St Vincent De Paul Society, the IHC and various medical research organisations.

Mr Green also gave money to charities in his native County Donegal in Ireland.

Robyn Scott of Philanthropy New Zealand says Mr Green came to New Zealand as a young Irish immigrant and worked hard in the construction business, later investing in land and various industries.

"(Mr Green) has chosen to give a percentage back of what the business has made and will make into the future."

He received the Queen's Service Medal in this year's New Year's Honours and was also the recipient of a papal knighthood.
