Japan goes to top of their pool in under-17 World Cup

Japan has thrashed France 7 - 1 in the under-17 women's football World Cup in Hamilton to go top of their pool.

Japan led 6 - 1 at half time.

In Wellington, the Republic of Korea beat Brazil 2 - 1, so the Latin American giants join hosts New Zealand in being eliminated after just two games.

Earlier, England qualified for the last eight after beating Nigeria 1 - nil in Wellington, while the USA knocked out Paraguay with a 3 - 1 victory at Waikato Stadium.

New Zealand play a final game against Colombia in Wellington on Tuesday.
