Five people to be deported over visa fraud

6:47 pm on 17 July 2012

Five people who came to New Zealand on student visas obtained by fraud have now been located and are awaiting deportation..

Immigration New Zealand general manager Peter Elms says updated information shows that 246 people who fraudulently obtained visas are still in New Zealand.

Mr Elms says the investigation into the frauds is expected to take several more weeks.

As part of that investigation, a joint operation with police on Monday night found eight students at a property in Blenheim with evidence they had been working on a vineyard.

None of the eight spoke English and they have been served with deportation liability notices.

Mr Elms says some of those already in custody will leave the country as early as next week.
