Millionaire businessman Owen Glenn has launched an $8 million project in South Auckland to target child abuse and domestic violence.

The Monaco-based New Zealander says the initiative, in the suburb of Otara, will be funded by his Glenn Family Foundation.

Mr Glenn says the donation and project was prompted by the country's high statistics in child abuse and family violence.

He says the project will aim to improve the lives of children and families in the community, and will offer financial and moral support to local groups and organisations.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says Mr Glenn's donation is excellent news and should achieve results.

Ms Bennett says she is impressed with the scope of the funding and the number of organisations involved.

Prime Minister John Key says Mr Glenn has been very generous, and it's a great example for other very well-off New Zealanders to follow.
