East Coast drought measures announced

9:49 am on 21 April 2009

The East Coast region has been declared a drought area - for the third consecutive year.

There was some rainfall in the Gisborne and Wairoa area on Monday but Federated Farmers says it's not enough.

The Government has announced tax assistance measures, funding for farm management advice and funding for Rural Support Trusts.

Some farmers say they have no cattle feed left and the situation is one of the worst in years.

Federated Farmers says it will take up to two months for rain to produce reasonable animal feed.
