The condition of the bus company director seriously injured when he was hit by one of his firm's buses in central Wellington has improved slightly.

NZ Bus director Tim Brown suffered head injuries and a punctured lung when he was hit by a bus near the corner of Willis and Mercer Streets about 1pm on Thursday.

Mr Brown is in intensive care in Wellington Hospital. A hospital spokesman says his condition has improved slightly.

He is the 10th person to have been hit by a bus since the council removed a long-established central city pedestrian mall and re-directed traffic last year to try to make public transport more efficient.

Mr Brown is also a senior executive of NZ Bus parent company Infratil.
