A moderate earthquake occurred on Saturday afternoon off the East Coast.
GNS Science says the 5.8-magnitude quake struck 150 km east of Ruatoria at a depth of 9km, at 4.54pm.
It says the intensity was severe and was felt in Gisborne and Hawke's Bay.
Meanwhile, a strong earthquake has struck at sea in the Pacific.
The 5.9 shake occurred on Saturday evening about 420km west-south-west of the Fiji capital Suva.
