Funding squeeze holds back road safety improvements

6:16 am on 22 July 2012

Pressure on the transport budget has led to some road safety measures not being funded.

A Transport Ministry document says low cost, high benefit roading improvements such as rumble strips and wire ropes are not being given money because of funding constraints.

Associate Transport Minister Simon Bridges says the Government is committed to road safety, and while funding is constrained, money is still being spent in this area.

He says if economic conditions were better, it's foreseeable more would be spent on road safety.

Nearly all areas in the transport budget have been held or cut for the rest of the decade, except funding of new highway infrastructure.
