New Zealanders have voted the kakapo as their favourite bird, according to a survey released on Friday.
The Royal New Zealand Forest & Bird Society says it received more than 2,500 votes during its four-week survey.
The green and yellow kakapo, the world's heaviest parrot, was the most popular bird with 578 votes.
The annual bird survey rated the takahe second and the kokako third.
New Zealand's national bird, the kiwi, couldn't make the top 10 and was voted 13th with 102 votes.
