A new report has found that more than 1100 people in New Zealand die each year from air pollution from fires, car exhausts and industry fumes.

The report was commissioned two years ago by the Ministries of Health and Transport, the Transport Agency and the Health Research Council.

The numbers are based on the last Census in 2006 and include 67 urban areas - which made up 73% of the then-population.

The report says the social costs associated with pollution, costs the country almost $4.3 billion per year.
