Police in Ohakune have named a woman who fell to her death while snowboarding on Saturday at Turoa ski field.

She was Adele Joanne Sawyer, 29, a graphic designer from Wellington, who fell into a waterhole in the "organ pipes" area of Mount Ruapehu, at about 1.30pm on Saturday.

The weather conditions were fine at the time of the accident though more rocks than normal were exposed, because of the dwindling amount of snow.

Sergeant Graeme Rumble says the full circumstances of the incident are still being investigated and the death has been referred to the coroner.
