Police charge one after brawl in Christchurch

Police in Christchurch investigating a street brawl on Tuesday night say they have charged one man with assault.

Detective senior sergeant Greg Murton says the man, who is in his 30s, appeared in court on Wednesday morning and was remanded on bail to reappear on 7 August.

He was one of two men treated at Christchurch Hospital last night and then discharged.

Two other men remain in hospital in a stable condition.

Mr Murton says up to eight people were involved in the incident in Simeon Street, Spreydon.

He says it's not known what triggered the fight but there appears to be a history of contact between the two groups involved.

A woman who saw the group fighting outside her home says afterwards she found a plank with nails in it lying in her driveway, near a pool of blood.

The woman, who has asked not to be named, says she is now worried about the safety of her five children.

The woman says she first heard yelling, and looked out her window to see two groups, each of about five men, fighting in the street.

She says there was a home invasion at the house next door on Monday night.
