An archeological research project is underway at the Wairau Bar near Blenheim, where remains taken from 14th century graves are to be re-interred.
The contents of 44 graves excavated between 1938 and 1959 are currently held by Canterbury Museum, which agreed earlier this year, to return them.
Researchers from the University of Otago will return to the site in January, in an attempt to gain more understanding of the settlement.
The bones will be reinterred once the dig is finished.
