Corrections may change prison officers' uniforms

The Corrections Department has confirmed it is considering changing the colour and fabric of prison guards' uniforms.

The department says it is reviewing uniforms worn by custodial staff.

It says feedback from staff on the present green uniform, introduced in 1976, indicates that it is old-fashioned, uncomfortable and not functional.

Corrections Service development manager Brendan Anstiss says the review is considering what, if any, changes can be made to create a uniform that staff can be proud to wear.

He says a change in fabric and possibly colour are, among other things, under consideration.

The prison officers' union wants uniforms similar to those worn by police officers for prison guards.

The Corrections Association says the current uniform for prison staff is not fit for the purpose and does not portray a professional image.

President Beven Hanlon says uniforms worn by police officers and prison officers in other countries are identical.

Mr Hanlon says police uniforms look smart and work better than those worn by prison officers.

But the Police Association says it is concerned at suggestions that prison guards be given uniforms similar to those worn by police officers.

Association vice-president Chris Cahill says it is important the public can easily recognise sworn police officers.
