Police in Nelson say a 25-year-old woman driver fleeing from officers reached speeds exceeding 130 kilometres an hour in a built-up area.

Police say she was initially seen driving a red Toyota Carina at high speed along State Highway 60 near Mapua early on Friday afternoon.

Officers pursued the car briefly but gave up because her driving was so dangerous.

Police say they spotted the car in Richmond a few minutes later but abandoned that chase because of the woman's speed.

They say she was arrested soon after, when she stopped in Nayland Rd and ran into a house.

A woman has been charged with reckless driving, failing to stop, unlawfully being on a property and resisting arrest.
