Police in Auckland are hunting for a man who is believed to have tried to abduct two girls.

They say he grabbed and threatened a 13-year-old who was walking along a road in Grey Lynn on Sunday. She fought back, screamed for help and escaped.

Minutes later, say police, a 10-year-old girl was approached in a similar manner. She also managed to break free.

Detective Sergeant Miller Rewi says police believe the incidents are linked.

Police describe the man as a Maori or Polynesian man aged in his 20s, of medium build and wearing tan trousers and a brown hooded sweatshirt.
