A group of artists and a curator are flying to Samoa on Tuesday with Prime Minister John Key to take part in celebrations marking 50 years of the country's Treaty of Friendship with New Zealand.

Composer and producer Matthew Faiumu Salapu is one of the six artists on the Return to Hawaiiki exchange.

Better known as the hip hop artist Anonymouz, he will be holding a week-long workshop with music students to share his expertise in studio technology.

"How to go about writing songs, recording then mixing, mastering, and with technology I'll be taking over some recording studio gear and getting into production - something which they don't do much of there."

He says it will be a really interesting experience.

Mr Faiumu Salapu and the other artists are led by the painter Fatu Feu'u, whose solo exhibition launches a new arts centre in the tsunami-devastated village of Poutasi.

Mr Key will formally open the centre on Wednesday.
