Police are searching for a man who escaped from custody at the Lower Hutt District Court on Thursday afternoon.
They say Matthew Kidman escaped from the court at about 2.30 and remains on the run, though they don't consider him dangerous.
Officers are checking Queensgate Mall and other areas of Lower Hutt.
The Lower Hutt District Court could not say what charges Mr Kidman was due to appear on.
