The legal career of Auckland barrister Barry Hart may be over after being found guilty of professional misconduct.

The Law Society's disciplinary tribunal says some fees charged by Mr Hart were grossly excessive.

He was also found guilty of obstructing the society's investigations.

Law Society president Jonathan Temm told Morning Report the penalties Mr Hart will face have yet to be decided. But he said the charges are serious.

Mr Temm said the incident shows that someone's legal reputation is no barrier to their conduct being investigated.
