Heavy rain forecast for much of the West Coast on Sunday has prompted a severe weather warning from MetService.
A front was expected to move through Fiordland and up to Westland on Sunday, and into Buller and Nelson by early Monday morning.
MetService says the heavy rain will also affect the headwaters of the main lakes and rivers in Otago and Canterbury.
The service has put out a severe weather warning, saying the front was expected to drop up to 200mm of rain in Fiordland by 3pm on Sunday.
MetService said there would be heavy falls at the headwaters of the Otago and Canterbury lakes for between 12 and 15 hours on Sunday.
