The police in New Plymouth say the suspicious death of a man on Sunday is now a homicide inquiry.
Peri Niwa, 31, was found dead in a house in Squire Place in Blagdon just after midnight.
Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Coward says there appears to have been a confrontation between two groups before Mr Niwa's death.
He says Mr Niwa didn't live at the Squire Place house but knew the residents, and a post-mortem held on Monday will determine how he died.
