National forms government in record time

3:11 pm on 16 November 2008

The National Party has formed a government in the shortest period after an election under the current electoral system.

Confirmation of the new government's arrangements are coming just eight days after the election - the shortest timeframe in the history of the MMP electoral system.

It took four weeks in 2005 for Labour to roll out its governing arrangements, as talks were delayed for two weeks until special votes confirmed its narrow election night majority.

This time United Future has reached a deal with National to provide confidence and supply in return for a ministerial post outside Cabinet for leader and sole MP Peter Dunne.

Both the Maori Party co-leaders, Pita Sharples and Tariana Turia, have been given roles outside Cabinet and ACT has also reached an agreement with ministerial roles outside Cabinet for its leader, Rodney Hide, and list MP Heather Roy.

The incoming prime minister, John Key, plans to be sworn in by Wednesday so he can leave the next day for the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit in Peru.
