MPs to get greater understanding of palliative care

5:09 pm on 5 August 2012

Hospice New Zealand says a new parliamentary group focusing on palliative care will raise awareness and discussion about long-term funding.

Politicians involved in the group will meet for the first time in two weeks.

Hospice New Zealand chief executive Mary Schumacher says palliative care involves many different groups working with a person and their family.

She says they want to improve the understanding and awareness of palliative care.

Ms Schumacher says with an ageing population, and people living longer, there will be more demand for this care.

She says long-term planning will need to be carried out looking at providers and funding.
