Forecasters say rainy weather will set in on Tuesday around the North Island and heavy rain is likely to pound the east coast of the South Island on Tuesday night.
MetService forecaster Heath Gullery says the front is being closely monitored and heavy rain warnings for the Canterbury region may be issued on Tuesday morning.
Mr Gullery says the rain is likely to continue in Canterbury and Marlborough on Wednesday.
Torrential rain plagued Canterbury and Marlborough last week, flooding low-lying areas, closing some roads and causing damage to some rural bridges in South Canterbury.
