Power companies say they have gained 10,000 customers from Contact Energy in a backlash against the company.
Rivals reported the increase after Contact doubled the amount it could pay its directors and also lifted prices by 11% in Wellington and Otago.
Trustpower says 2,500 Contact customers have switched, mainly in Dunedin.
Meridian Energy says it has gained 2,000 customers and Mercury Energy says its sign-up rate has tripled .
Contact Energy says the company received a number of phone complaints but the issue has "subsided" and that the loss of customers is less than rival companies claim.
