South Canterbury still on flood alert

10:44 am on 8 August 2012

South Canterbury remains on flood alert for the second time in a week, following a severe weather warning from MetService.

The Canterbury Regional Council says the ground throughout the region is still saturated from about 240 millimetres of rain that fell last week and steady rain continues to fall.

A council spokesperson says rivers did not rise much overnight on Tuesday night but staff remain on flood alert and are monitoring river levels hourly.

The spokesperson says the weather forecast is for rain for the rest of Wednesday and farmers should move stock to higher ground as a precaution.

Motorists are also urged to be careful on the roads.
