Police in Invercargill used DNA to arrest a Christchurch man on Wednesday over an assault on a child in Te Anau in 2002.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Bowman says police travelled to Christchurch and arrested a man there in relation to a burglary and assault, when a visiting girl, aged seven, was assaulted at a house as she slept.

He says forensic evidence has linked the man to the incident.

A man, aged 30, is due to appear in Christchurch District Court next week on charges of burglary and indecent assault on a girl aged under 12 years.
